Herbs to Manage Menstrual Cramps, PMS, and PMDD

Written on: 14 Mar 08 and Filed under: ask sean, herbs

Jamika asks:

Dear Sean- Can you advise an herb for really really really bad menstrual cramps?

Yes I can.
In the herbal world cramping is considered spasms. What you want to control cramping is naturally an anti-spasmodic. This would be similar to formulas that one would use for nervousness, shock, as well as cramping.

To name 1 herb for this condition I would definitely go with one that is anti-spasmodic and has affinity for the Female Reproductive System.
Black Haw is the most powerful single herb for this. A possible substitution is Cramp Bark (for cost, availability, etc…)
A tincture would work best here. Take about 20 drops 2-3 times daily or as needed.

General herbs many may have around or easier availability would be Skullcap, Lobelia, and Valerian.

Jamika, hope things go well for you. Should you get me more info we can come up with a bit better of a formula for you next time.

Perhaps to make it easy you can just buy a formula straight from online that can help very much in this! Try these PMS & Cramps forumlas from Dimmak Herbs

I’m a reporter for a national health magazine, and I came across this blog while researching a story about the growing popularity of alternative medicine. Apparently, 1 in 3 Americans now use some form of complementary/alternative medicine, according to the National Institutes of Health.

I’m looking to interview a woman who has used Chinese herbs to treat allergies or PMS.

We’re mainly interested in understanding why she chose alt. therapy over conventional medications, and what the experience has been like. Interviews are conducted by phone and should not take more than 20 minutes.

Interested subjects should:
- be between the ages of 22-40
- be willing to submit a head shot
- not otherwise be involved in the CAM world

Story deadline is April 5.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Indeed, you need to administer an herb that contains anti-spasmodic constituents such as the Pasque Flower, to ease menstrual cramps. The glycoside compounds of this herb also exudes diaphoretic, diuretic and sedating properties while addressing nervine conditions that helps relieve PMS symptoms. Taking tinctures of the herb will work but you could also use standardized herbal remedies intended for PMS symptoms.

I’ve also found that sweet fennel, pasque flower, and lemon balm promote a healthy reproductive system for female. There are herbal remedies that naturally and effectively treat pre-menstrual symptoms. More and more women nowadays can attest to these natural alternatives for their support on overall systemic health.
